![]() And it’s possible to suspect the producers dreamed this might be a pilot for a spin-off TV series, which not surprisingly has never materialised.Īnd given Nautilus is firmly mired in the bottom-feeder end of the action market, we’re gratefully spared a gratuitous shot of naked breasts which I suspected to see swimming over the horizon at any moment. There’s some footage of a very real aircraft carrier and it’s jets, and I couldn’t tell if it was filmed with permission, stock footage, or test shots from the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, filmed by a disgruntled and hungover 2nd unit before Tony Scott came onboard to direct Tom Cruise et al.ĭirector Rodney McDonald previously made submarine terrorist thriller, Steel Sharks, which also featured Wolf, and there’s no faulting his enthusiasm for this project. I did like the submarine itself, though if you told me it was left over models of the Seaview submarine from 1960s TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, I’d believe you. The central oil rig location is impressive as are the underwater sequences which presumably hoovered up the budget, there doesn’t appear to have been much petty cash remaining roost for the far from special effects. However the author may have been tickled by the time travelling plot, and the way his treasured eco-themes survive intact. Taking its name from the submarine which featured in the classic novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by father of the science fiction Jules Verne, this seemingly hastily assembled affair unfairly subtracts rather than adds to his reputation. Functional at best with a lack of flair in cinematography, design, acting and writing, the enterprise is haunted at every turn by the spirit of Hollywood auteur, Ed Wood. The second face, the Attack Face, on the other hand, is a rough, but even, patterned surface, only broken by a single octagonal shape overlapping and sticking out of the otherwise circular Metal Wheel's shape. On each is engraved two shallow holes where stickers can be applied to depict a total of four blue stars, which, combined with Orion's Face's three blue flames, form the Orion constellation. The first one, facing up when Phantom is in Stamina Mode (henceforth known as the Stamina Face), displays Orion's figure-eyes, nose and grin-twice, as well as two identical long surfaces-smooth, but uneven-representing Orion's sword and scabbard. It consists of two vastly different faces. Phantom's Metal Frame makes up for most of Phantom's weight. By removing and flipping the Metal Frame, Phantom can alternate between two modes: Stamina Mode and Attack Mode. Phantom is composed of both a Metal Frame and a Core. The Orion 4D Clear Wheel works well with the Flash 4D Metal Wheel in combinations such as MF-H Flash Orion GB145RF: Orion's weight distribution is synergetic with Flash's, while Orion's shape exposes Flash's contact points perfectly, its broader sides complimenting Flash's oval shape in Attack Mode. However, this does not add significant weight. It contains the iron powder that all 4D Clear Wheels have. The two sharper sides of the 4D Clear Wheel represent the top of Orion's forehead, and create a distinct face when used in conjunction with Phantom. Orion is a four-sided 4D Clear Wheel that has two sharper contours and two broad edges. The version on the face, however, depicts 'The Phantom' also known as Orion. In Greek mythology, Orion or "The Hunter" was a giant huntsman who died at the hands of the giant scorpion, Scorpio, and was placed as a constellation in space along with Scorpio by the God of Sky and Thunder, Zeus. The more you fish the better your skill becomes, and the bigger your green window will be, making it easier to nab those pesky pesce. The fish can move about quite a lot and if your bar depletes it’ll escape. Now comes the tricky bit, because you’ll have to hold the action button to keep your green border around the fish long enough for the catch bar to fill up completely. Wait for a fish to bite and quickly tap the action button as soon as the exclamation point appears. That means your line will be cast as far as it’ll go and you’ll have a better chance of catching a higher value fish that are easier to catch (although you’ll catch different fish depending on where your line lands, so once you’ve mastered fishing it’s good to experiment). Then hold down the action button and don’t let go of the button until your cursor hits the top of the meter. Head to a body of water and equip your rod. The problem is that it can be tricky to master at first, but there’s definitely a knack to it that the game really doesn’t explain. Early on in the game you’ll be given a fishing rod from Willy and you’ll quickly discover that if you put some time into it, it can become a very lucrative hobby indeed. ![]() ![]() ![]() The 1969 to 1971 case of Charles Manson, who was said to have brainwashed his followers to commit murder and other crimes, brought the issue to renewed public attention. The concept of brainwashing has been raised in defense of criminal charges. The report concludes that "exhaustive research of several government agencies failed to reveal even one conclusively documented case of 'brainwashing' of an American prisoner of war in Korea." Legal cases and the "brainwashing defense" Bank robbery by Patty Hearst and Symbionese Liberation Army members Army published a report entitled Communist Interrogation, Indoctrination, and Exploitation of Prisoners of War, which called brainwashing a "popular misconception". In 1956, after reexamining the concept of brainwashing following the Korean War, the U.S. (Lifton's 1961 book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of "Brainwashing" in China, was based on this research.) Lifton found that when the POWs returned to the United States their thinking soon returned to normal, contrary to the popular image of "brainwashing." In addition to interviews with 25 Americans and Europeans, Lifton interviewed 15 Chinese citizens who had fled after having been subjected to indoctrination in Chinese universities. The men themselves are not to blame, and they have my deepest sympathy for having been used in this abominable way." īeginning in 1953, Robert Jay Lifton interviewed American servicemen who had been POWs during the Korean War as well as priests, students, and teachers who had been held in prison in China after 1951. If they did, however, too familiar are the mind-annihilating methods of these Communists in extorting whatever words they want. Clark asserted: "Whether these statements ever passed the lips of these unfortunate men is doubtful. After Chinese radio broadcasts claimed to quote Frank Schwable, Chief of Staff of the First Marine Air Wing admitting to participating in germ warfare, United Nations commander General Mark W. military and government laid charges of brainwashing in an effort to undermine confessions made by POWs to war crimes, including biological warfare. Ford and British army Colonel James Carne also claimed that the Chinese subjected them to brainwashing techniques during their imprisonment. Hunter and others used the Chinese term to explain why, during the Korean War (1950–1953), some American prisoners of war (POWs) cooperated with their Chinese captors, and even in a few cases defected to their side. Hunter was an outspoken anticommunist and was alleged to be a CIA agent working undercover as a journalist. The Oxford English Dictionary records the earliest known English-language usage of the word "brainwashing" in an article by a journalist Edward Hunter, in Miami News, published on 24 September 1950. The term punned on the Taoist custom of "cleansing / washing the heart / mind" ( xǐxīn,洗心) before conducting ceremonies or entering holy places. The Chinese term xǐnǎo (洗腦,"wash brain") was originally used to describe the coercive persuasion used under the Maoist government in China, which aimed to transform "reactionary" people into "right-thinking" members of the new Chinese social system. ![]() In casual speech, "brainwashing" and its verb form, "brainwash", are used figuratively to describe the use of propaganda to persuade or sway public opinion. The concept of brainwashing is not now generally accepted as a scientific fact. ![]() Scientific and legal debate followed, as well as media attention, about the possibility of brainwashing being a factor when Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was used, or in the conversion of people to groups which are considered to be cults. In the late 1960s and 1970s, the CIA's MKUltra experiments failed with no operational use of the subjects. Research into the concept also looked at Nazi Germany, at some criminal cases in the United States, and at the actions of human traffickers. The term "brainwashing" was first used in English by Edward Hunter in 1950 to describe how the Chinese government appeared to make people cooperate with them during the Korean War. Brainwashing is said to reduce its subject's ability to think critically or independently, to allow the introduction of new, unwanted thoughts and ideas into their minds, as well as to change their attitudes, values, and beliefs.
